International Business Machine Corporation (IBM) headquartered at Armonk, New York, U.S.A. is one of the oldest and profitable technological companies in the world. It recently completed its 100 years of existence in 2011. Its Indian subsidiary IBM India forayed into India in the 1970s before exiting and re-entering again in 1992. Today it employs around 1,31,000 people in India, making it the largest MNC employer in India. The Indian workforce constitutes about quarter of the total global workforce. Seeing the potential in India and to encourage students, it had started “The Great Mind Challenge” competition in 2004 in India. It is recognized as the largest technical contest for students by the Limca Book of Records.
About the Competition –
Any student studying in a college in India can participate. The student can be from any branch, however basic IT skills would be an advantage since the competition requires coding. The competition requires the students develop software solutions to the topics given by the organiser. The software has to be developed using one or more open source software’s provided by IBM India. Tutorials on the softwares to be used and other e-learning material are provided on their website. It is a team competition and each team should have a faculty mentor. Timeline –
Registration for the competition has already begun. The competition requires the students to first choose their topic and then make a Software Requirement Specification (SRS) document detailing your solution and the software required for the project. Once your SRS is approved, your faculty mentor will be provided with the software kit and you are ready to go. The timeline of the competition is as follows:-
31st December, 2012 - Software Requirement Submission (SRS) deadline
31st March, 2013 - Project Submission deadline
Rules –
1) All the team members and faculty mentor should be from the same college.
2) A team should consist of 2-4 members excluding the mentor.
3) The software solution should be built using atleast one of the open source softwares provided by IBM India.
4) The SRS submission and Project submission should strictly adhere to the format given on the website. Link to the format is provided below.
Prizes –
1) You will receive a certificate of participation if you successfully submit a project. A participation certificate from this competition will definitely add value to your CV.
2) The final prize is yet to be announced.
