The optics and instrumentation lab is in the ETS organization. The lab works on cutting edge research in the areas of optical sensors and instrumentation for the GE businesses. This includes working on optics and electronics based sensor systems for a variety of GE applications. The lab helps in developing new products and applications for customers, including setting up experiments, creating/conducting designed experiments to help analyze combustion/ emission process, oil and gas instrumentation and performing feasibility studies of new optical technologies.

Role Summary/Purpose:As a lead engineer you will conduct applied research in the areas of optics and instrumentation with a particular focus on down hole instrumentation. The research will be focused on developing novel harsh environment instrumentation that can be used for oil and gas exploration. You will need to lead projects in the area of down hole instrumentation, contribute to strategic research in this area.
Essential Responsibilities:The successful candidate will be a member of the Global Research team developing and conducting experiments in the area of optical systems. The candidate will lead projects developing prototype sensor systems for GE businesses. The key responsibilities include
  • Work with the GE oil and gas business and GRC teams and principal scientists/engineers to formulate project plans for assigned projects and work with customers to track progress toward project deliverables

  • Developing novel instrumentation ideas for GE Oil & Gas instrumentation with a particular focus on down hole exploration technologies.

  • Developing simulation models for analysis of optics systems.

  • Opto-mechanical designs for harsh environment optical systems design

  • Experience developing new optical systems that utilize either existing commercially available equipment or novel optical solutions developed independently

  • Setting up room temperature or high temperature optical experiments

  • Analysis of the data and development of physics based models to explain the data

  • Effective communication of results by preparing reports, making presentations describing the analysis performed, solutions developed

  • Converting these results into patents and publications
  • Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Doctorate in Optical Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, or related discipline or a Masters degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Applied Physics with 3-5 years research experience.

  • Experience in down hole instrumentation for oil and gas exploration

  • Demonstrated experience with optics, hardware instrumentation, setting up and performing experiments, variety of data collection systems.

  • Knowledge of board level mixed signal circuit design.

  • Demonstrated experience in use of optical modeling software such as Zemax, code V

  • Demonstrated analytical, experimental, and problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated project leadership experience and ability to negotiate deliverables

  • Knowledge of Absorption spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance physics
  • Proficiency in Zemax
  • Knowledge of design of experiments (DOE) and design for six sigma (DFSS)
